Oops...! some problem!

Immediate Actions (OOW)

When notified that a person has (or may have) gone overboard:

Release both bridge wing smoke floats

Activate the Man Overboard position buttons on GPS units and ECDIS

Sound the Man Overboard Alarm (or failing that the General Alarm)

Call the Master

Inform the Engine Room

Reduce Speed

Inform shipping in the vicinity

If relevant, inform VTS or other traffic service

Immediate Actions (Master)

Bring the ship back to the scene of the accident with a suitable manoeuvre, for example using a Williamson turn.

Prepare recovery equipment (for example Rescue or Lifeboat, Embarkation Ladder(s), medical equipment).

If possible to recover person, do so. Inform anyone who was advised of the Man Overboard situation initially.

Keep a record of all actions taken.

Inform the Company

Actions if Person Not Immediately Recovered

Issue a Distress call.

Commence a search operation.

Inform all shipping in the vicinity, seek assistance.

Inform VTS or traffic control, seek assistance.

Prepare medical equipment.

Follow-Up Actions

File SafetyCulture report.

In event of injury, prepare injury report.
