THE ORDER TO ABANDON SHIP CAN ONLY BE GIVEN BY THE MASTER (OR THE MOST SENIOR OFFICER ONBOARD) AND CAN ONLY BE GIVEN VERBALLY.

ABANDONING SHIP IS A LAST RESORT.

Issue a distress call if not done already. Take steps to inform as many people as possible as early as possible that abandoning ship is being considered.

Ensure LSA Life-Saving Appliances are ready for immediate use.

Gather as much additional equipment as possible (eg. blankets, food, water, survivial suits, medical equipment etc)

Gather EPIRB(s), SART(s), emergency VHF radios

Stop the main engine, but do not stop generators - power may be required during the evacuation of the ship.

Before abandoning ship, again inform as many parties as possible by as many means as possible (eg. Sat-C, Satcomms, Sat Phone, GMDSS etc)

Carry out a full headcount to ensure everyone is accounted for
